The Memphis Grizzlies are baffling.
For many years, they have outperformed their inherent metrics because their grit-and-grind style enabled them to win close games more often than other squads. That devotion to defensive excellence and physical play became synonymous with these Beale Street residents.
However, what happens?
Vince Carter and Zach Randolph have departed into the Sacramento Kings. Tony Allen and JaMychal Green stay free agents, and there is no telling whether they will return to their old stomping grounds for 2017-18. The roster feels more than it has in decades lethargic.
And yet, Mike Conley and Marc Gasol are still current. Provided that the group’s two best players remain in precisely the same uniform, they will be undeniably competitive on the two ends of the ground. Each deserves to be in the All-Star combination season in and year out, and they’ve taken over as the Grizzlies’ true leaders.
Is that sufficient? Can Memphis supplement the two stars’ efforts?
Betting on the Grizzlies falling entirely out of the playoff conversation would be foolish, wherever they wind up at the Western hierarchy. However, the chances seem far longer this time around.
